Former US President Bill Clinton gave UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a vote of confidence after a 45-minute discussion of global hotspots.
"I think he's got a great handle on this job," Clinton said after the meeting Thursday. "I think he's going to do fine."
Clinton's two-year appointment as former Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special envoy for tsunami relief ended on December 31, a day before Ban took the reins of the world body. The UN said the former president asked for Thursday's meeting.
UN deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said the topics included follow-up to the December 26, 2004 tsunami that sent 33-foot high waves roaring across the Indian Ocean, killing more than 216,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
Ban and Clinton also discussed the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region, Somalia, Uganda, Congo, Iran, Iraq, the Middle East peace process and HIV/AIDS and what the UN and the Clinton Global Initiative were doing about global problems, Okabe said.
