Britain's UN ambassador: Iran sanctions are working

United Nations sanctions on Iran, imposed over the Tehran's controversial nuclear program, have taken an economic and political toll on the country, Britain's UN ambassador said Wednesday. John Sawers, said "another click on the ratchet" - a third round of UN sanctions on Iran would further help convince the nation to halt its nuclear program. Tehran has said its nuclear ambitions are to produce electricity. "The economic effect has been to contribute to a further downturn in Iran's trade, particularly with Europe, and the readiness of international companies to invest," Sawers told reporters. "The political effect has been that the unanimity of the international community ... has contributed to a pretty fierce debate within Iran about what price they should be willing to pay for pursuing their nuclear ambitions."
