British soldier killed in southern Afghanistan

NATO troops attacked a militant base in southern Afghanistan in an operation Monday that left one British soldier dead and several others wounded, while gunmen killed a deputy provincial council chief in eastern Afghanistan, officials said. The soldiers were attacking the base in Helmand province when they were "engaged from several insurgent positions," NATO said. Aircraft later bombed the militant fighters. The death brought to two the number of British soldiers killed in the last three days. In the province of Nuristan, Ahmad Shah Wakilzada, the deputy chief of the provincial council, was shot and killed while driving home from a meeting with NATO reconstruction officials, said Gen. Ghulamullah Nuristani, the deputy provincial police chief.
