An international organization that tracks funding to terrorist groups will be headquartered in Canada, the country's finance minister announced Friday.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Toronto will house the headquarters of the Egmont Group, an organization which represents more than 100 financial investigation units.
The government will contribute US$4.5 million over the next five years to help establish the group, which will analyze, investigate and prosecute terrorist financing and share financial intelligence on money laundering.
Flaherty says Canada is taking an international leadership role to combat terrorist financing.
His announcement is part of a series of measures the Conservative government plans to announce to fight the funding of terrorists.
