China confirms new bird flu outbreak in poultry

China on Wednesday confirmed a new outbreak of bird flu in poultry, its 25th since Oct. 19. In the latest case, 300 fowls died on Nov. 24 in Xinyuan, a county in the far northwestern region of Xinjiang, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed Wednesday the poultry deaths were due to the virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu, the agency said. Authorities culled more than 118,000 poultry within a three-kilometer (two-mile) radius as a precaution, it said.
