France will urge the next European Union summit to support the Palestinians' efforts toward a coalition government that would include Hamas, President Jacques Chirac said Sunday.
In telephone conversations Sunday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Saudi King Abdullah, Chirac said he would ask the EU to support the power-sharing efforts at its next summit in March, Chirac's office said in a statement.
Chirac "noted France's support for the Mecca accords in view to the formation of a government of national unity, and as a first step toward the full application of the conditions of the Quartet," his office said.
France "will summon the European Union to support this step at its next summit," it quoted Chirac as saying.
