Czech PM will not attend opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics

Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek will not attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games after Beijing's crackdown on Tibet, a government spokeswoman said Wednesday. The prime minister believes, however, that Czech athletes should participate in the Games. Members of the Cabinet had urged Topolanek to skip the opening ceremony, spokeswoman Jana Bartosova said, adding that the situation in Tibet also influenced his decision. Czech President Vaclav Klaus said he would not attend because of a planned surgery.
