A government doctor is estimating that two nights of artillery attacks on Sri Lanka's northern war zone may have killed as many as 1,000 civilians. Dr. V. Shanmugarajah said Monday that more than 400 bodies were brought to the hospital. He said the large number of wounded and the stories survivors told him of burying their dead themselves made it clear the death toll was far higher. He said that the overall toll over two nights was as many as 1,000. He said many wounded also were not brought to the hospital and likely died from their injuries.
