Egyptian FM: Pope does not understand 'real Islam'
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF
Egypt's foreign minister on Friday said Pope Benedict XVI must explain himself after insulting the Muslim world with "unfortunate" remarks about Islam and jihad.
"He has to explain himself, and tell us what exactly did he mean," Egypt's Ahmed Aboul Gheit told The Associated Press. "It can't just be left like that."
Speaking in Germany, the pope cited an obscure Medieval text that characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman."
"It's a statement that shows there is a lack of understanding of the real Islam," Gheit said during an interview at the Nonaligned Movement summit in Havana.
