EU ministers set to launch Afghan police mission

European Union defense ministers were expected to give final approval Monday to a police training mission in Afghanistan to start next month. The ministers were due to set a mid-June start date for the plan, in which 160 police experts would be deployed under the command of German police officer Friedrich Eichele. "It is important that we now press forward with police (training), for our aim must be to achieve self-sustainable security in Afghanistan," said German Defense Minister Franc Josef Jung as he arrived to chair the one-day meeting.
