Former Liberian President Charles Taylor went on trial Monday for allegedly orchestrating unspeakable atrocities in Sierra Leone's bloody civil war, becoming the first African leader to face justice at an international tribunal.
Taylor was absent from the courtroom when the three judges and one alternative judge took their seats on the raised bench, opening the trial one year after Taylor was brought to the Netherlands by the Special Court for Sierra Leone - a landmark event that human rights activists say proves that nobody on the continent is above the law.
