A pledge by Ukraine's prime minister-in-waiting to review a controversial gas supply deal could pave the way to a repeat of the New Year gas war with Russia that saw supplies to Europe temporarily disrupted, natural gas monopoly OAO Gazprom said.
"The announcement by Yulia Tymoshenko is the latest alarming call for European countries," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kuprianov said in a statement late Thursday. "Implementing the threats voiced today in Ukraine is a path to a new gas crisis. ... The words of Yulia Tymoshenko once again confirm that Ukraine is the weak link in the system of gas supplies to Europe."
Shortly after announcing a coalition deal between Ukraine's former Orange Revolution allies that opens the way to her comeback as prime minister, Tymoshenko called for "wide, additional and deep revisions," to January's gas agreement with Russia.
