Hamas spokesman confirms contacts with France

A Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip confirmed on Monday his group's contacts with France. Sami Abu Zuhri said the group has held contacts with many European officials, including French representatives. He said the talks were to "discover Hamas's opinions" on political issues and there were no discussions of opening formal diplomatic relations. Abu Zuhri would not say what other countries have spoken to Hamas. He said they have to decide whether to go public. On Monday, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said his government has held informal contacts with Hamas. The European Union considers Hamas a terrorist group.
