The International Atomic Energy Agency's board met Thursday to decide whether to refer Iran to the UN Security Council over concerns that Tehran may be seeking nuclear weapons.
The IAEA's 35-nation board was looking at a European draft resolution calling for such a move because of concerns the Islamic country's nuclear program is not "exclusively for peaceful purposes."
The IAEA board was expected to approve the motion easily because Russia and China, which both have veto power on the Security Council, now support reporting Iran after opposing the move for months.
"Iran will find itself before the Security Council," US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in Washington. "Iran is working to develop a nuclear weapon."
