India tightens Taj Mahal security, citing threat

Police tightened security around the Taj Mahal, India's famed white-marble monument to love, saying there was a specific threat to attack the site on India's Independence Day celebrated Wednesday. Authorities refused to provide any details of the threat, but the warning came amid a broader national security clampdown as the country marked 60 years of independence from Britain. "Security around the Taj Mahal has been tightened as there is specific intelligence information about a terrorist attack on this marvel of marble," said R. K. Tiwari, a senior police officer. Another senior officer, Vikram Singh, said India had sealed its border with Nepal, fearing Islamic militants planned to infiltrate the country through Nepal and carry out suicide attacks.
