Indian authorities deploy police to protect tourists in resort area

Indian authorities deployed thousands of police in a popular resort area to protect tourists after a group protesting the building of industrial parks said it could not ensure the safety of visitors, an official said. The group in Goa, a palm-fringed state on India's western coast popular with foreigners, said earlier this week that its protests would intensify on Friday, warning tourists to leave because things may take an "ugly turn." In response, the government has deployed some 6,000 police and called in a 300-strong special paramilitary force to protect visitors in the beaches and towns, a senior government official said.
