Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma apologized Sunday for saying the US atomic bombings of Japan during WWII "couldn't be helped," a news report said.
Kyuma said he was sorry for his remarks during a press conference in Nagasaki, where he is from, Kyodo News agency reported.
The defense minister said Saturday the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II were inevitable. His comments drew sharp criticism from survivors, and opposition lawmakers called for his dismissal.
