More than 100 US philanthropists, business and community leaders converged in Israel Sunday for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee's (JDC) first-ever Board of Directors meeting held here, between May 6-11. In addition to reviewing existing JDC programs and future initiatives, delegates are scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Welfare and Social Services Minister Isaac Herzog, Acting President Dalia Itzhik and other dignitaries. They will also spend two days visiting JDC projects throughout Israel, which include a range of social welfare programs assisting vulnerable populations such as immigrants, the elderly, and children in need. This year, the JDC has allocated a record $140 million for projects here. Of the funds, $23m. is earmarked for the UJC Israel Emergency Campaign for renovation and renewal in the north of Israel. The JDC's 93-year history and ongoing dedication to the establishment and maintenance of social programs in Israel was recognized with the recent selection of JDC-Israel as a recipient of the 2007 Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement and Contribution to Israeli Society.
