Kashmir: 2 killed in battle with Islamic rebels

A fierce gunbattle between Indian soldiers and suspected Islamic rebels in India's part of divided Kashmir left two soldiers dead and one wounded, an official said Monday. Indian security forces acting on a tip had surrounded a house near the town of Kishtwar, 210 kilometers north of Jammu, Kashmir's winter capital, where insurgents were thought to be hiding, army spokesman S. D. Goswami said. A gunbattle broke out early Monday between security forces and the rebels leaving two soldiers dead and one wounded, he said. "The encounter is still going on and we have surrounded the house but we don't know the number of militants and the outfit to which they belong," Goswami said.
