Lawyers for seven Chinese Muslims held at Guantanamo Bay have asked a federal court to order their release, arguing they were captured in the same circumstances as others who were freed from US custody.
The seven men, members of the Uighur ethnic group who fled China, have never posed a threat to the United States and were held only to persuade the Chinese government to support the US war in Iraq, the attorneys allege in a suit filed Monday in Washington.
"They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and should be immediately released," said Susan Baker Manning, an attorney for the Uighurs.
The men would face persecution in China and should be granted asylum in the United States or a country with an Uighur population such as Sweden, Turkey or Germany, she added.
