Magnitude-5.3 temblor shakes northern Chile; no victims or damage

A new earthquake shook central Chile including the capital Monday following temblors over the weekend. No victims or damage were reported. The magnitude-5.3 temblor struck at 6:27 a.m. (0927 GMT), according to the Seismological Institute of the University of Chile. Its epicenter was located 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the city of Los Andes, and near the port city of Valparaiso. The US Geological Survey reported the magnitude at 4.9 with the epicenter 75 kilometers (45 miles) north of Santiago. Juan Cayupi, a duty official at the government's Emergency Bureau, said "the situation is normal throughout the region, there were no victims or damage."
