'Man gave orders to rape during Rwanda genocide'

A witness testified Thursday that a man on trial in Canada for war crimes during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda ordered the rapes of women. The witness, known as C19 under a court order protecting her identity, said Desire Munyaneza not only raped women, but was giving orders to others to do so. Munyaneza is the first person charged under Canada's War Crimes Act, which permits the trial of suspects for crimes that occurred abroad. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
