Merkel, Mubarak to meet on ME peace prospects

German Chancellor Angela Merkel meets Sunday with Egypt's president, as Berlin prepares to take a prominent role on the world stage at the head of the European Union and Group of Eight. Merkel said ahead of the visit by President Hosni Mubarak that Germany is ready to make "an active contribution" to tackling the Middle East's problems during its EU and G-8 presidency, starting January 1. Berlin hopes to inject new life into the so-called Quartet of international players that has been trying to promote Middle East peace - the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia.
