Militant ambush leaves Algerian soldier dead

An ambush by Islamist militants left one Algerian soldier dead and two others injured, national media reported Sunday. La Tribune newspaper said the soldier was killed when his army unit was attacked Saturday near the village of Crete, about 135 kilometers east of the capital, Algiers. Two homemade explosives went off near where the unit was patrolling, and then militants opened fire, killing one soldier and wounded two others, the newspaper reported. The site of the clash was near the Yakouren forest, where the Algerian military has been trying to root out militants over the past week. Eight militants have been killed in the operation, Algerian media reports said.
