Militant attack on Pakistani town kills 1 officer

Scores of militants fired rockets, killed one policeman and kidnapped a school principal in a northwestern Pakistani town where police had slain two militants accused of recruiting students for suicide attacks, police said. The militants launched coordinated attacks before dawn in the town of Tank, North West Frontier Province, sparking hours-long gunbattles with police that left at least one security official dead, local police chief Omar Hayyat said. The militants also burned two banks and kidnapped a school principal, Hayyat said. It was not immediately clear if the attackers suffered any casualties.
