Musharraf denies rumors of coup takeover
Pakistan's president rejected rumors that his military-led government had been overthrown in a coup while he was abroad, in comments from a New York interview broadcast on Pakistani television Monday.
A nationwide power outage and President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's visit to a US hospital over the weekend had pushed speculation to a fever pitch across this South Asian nation that a coup had been staged.
Government and military officials on Monday played down the coup speculation as unfounded rumors and all appeared normal on the streets of the capital, Islamabad.
Pakistan's Daily Times newspaper reported in a front page article that Musharraf's hospital visit and the power outage "combined to spark rumors of a military coup."
In New York, Musharraf dismissed the coup rumors as "nonsense in nonsense in nonsense."
