A Sept. 11, 2001, victim recently identified through advanced DNA technology was a firefighter whose remains were recovered from the World Trade Center site in 2001, the fire department said.
The firefighter is one of five victims the city medical examiner's office has identified from thousands of remains in recent days. Two people were identified last week; the office announced it had made three more identifications Wednesday.
In a letter to the families of 128 Fire Department of New York victims whose remains were never identified, the fire department said the firefighter's family wanted to keep the victim's name confidential.
"We respect that wish," FDNY Assistant Commissioner Suzanne Sebert wrote.
The FDNY lost 343 members when the twin towers collapsed.
