Newly independent Montenegro joins OSCE

Montenegro on Wednesday became a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the first international organization it has joined since becoming independent from Serbia. None of the 55 other members of the Vienna-based organization voiced objections to Montenegro's bid to join, according to a statement released by OSCE headquarters. On Thursday, Montenegro is expected to take its seat for the first time in the OSCE's Permanent Council, the organization's main negotiating and decision-taking body, the statement said. Montenegro declared independence from its union with Serbia on June 3, after its voters supported the separation in a referendum last month.
