Number of cars burned overnight in France drops

Just over 600 cars were burned in unrest overnight in France, about half as many as the previous night, a top Interior Ministry official said Monday. Claude Gueant, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy's chief of staff, told Europe-1 radio that 617 cars were burned across France. The night earlier, 1,173 vehicles were torched. "It's still enormous, but it's almost (half) yesterday," Gueant said. "We have reasons to think that common sense is winning out in neighborhoods touched by violence."
