A passer-by was killed and several other people were wounded in southern Pakistan on Friday during a strike by transport operators, witnesses and a government official said.
Ethnic Pashtuns who own and operate most of the public transport in the southern city of Karachi have been demanding compensation from the government for damage to their vehicles during protests in recent years.
The transport operators kept hundreds of their buses off the roads Friday, inconveniencing passengers in the nation's largest city of 15 million people.
Wasim Akhtar, a security official for Sindh province, said the protesters clashed with police in various parts of the city and set fire to a police kiosk, prompting authorities to use tear gas and baton charges to control the situation.
He said police were dispersing a crowd when someone opened fire, killing a passer-by and wounding others.
