Preliminary tests on white powder in a suspicious package found near CNN's office at the United Nations indicated that the substance was not harmful, a UN spokesman said.
"On the basis of preliminary results, the substance does not appear to be harmful but some tests continue," associate spokesman Farhan Haq said Friday night.
He said the package was detected at about 4 p.m. on the fourth floor of UN headquarters near the press area. It was not clear whether the package was in CNN's mailbox, in a mailbag on the floor nearby, or elsewhere in the corridor, he said.
UN security officers immediately informed the New York City Police Department and the Department of Environmental Protection, who dispatched teams to examine and test the package along with UN experts, he said.
