Paris man being investigated over mosque graffiti

A young man has been placed under investigation for degrading a place of worship after allegedly painting two swastikas on a door and window of the Paris Mosque last week, the Paris prosecutor's office said Thursday. The move is one step short of pressing charges under French law. The 20-year-old student, whose name was not given, has been released on probation. He is banned from visiting places of worship and has been ordered to undergo psychological counseling, an official at the prosecutor's office said. The man has no prior convictions. He was intoxicated when arrested and is also being probed for allegedly possessing narcotics and vandalizing nine cars near the mosque with paint, though he did not paint a swastika on the vehicles. Leaders of the Paris Mosque, an ornate building in southeast Paris, filed a legal complaint last week after discovering the graffiti.
