Police foiled a potentially deadly attack by suspected Islamic militants using a car packed with powerful explosives, which was found abandoned Wednesday in a southern Philippine town, officials said.
The car, loaded with at least 10 mortar rounds wired together with 4 kilograms (9 pounds) of nails, was found on a roadside in Surallah township in South Cotabato province, police said.
Bomb experts were able to defuse the explosives which were set to be detonated remotely, police said.
The bombs, similar to the type used by Muslim militant groups in the past, were among the most powerful explosives discovered by authorities in recent years in the central region of southern Mindanao island.
