US forces, following months of intelligence work, had tracked Osama bin Laden to a remote area of Pakistan and surrounded his compound.  A firefight ensued and the al Qaida leader was killed. Following Obama's startling announcement, US sources declared that they had taken custody of bin Laden's body and it would be handled according to Islamic law. Immediately following Obama's announcement, celebratory crowds gathered in Times Square and on the White House front lawn to wave American flags, shout slogans and rejoice.
