Zambian police confirmed Monday the death of 17 people who drowned when an overcrowded canoe capsized. Among the victims were 13 members of one family who were heading to a family funeral in a neighboring village. The accident occurred Friday on Lake Lusiwasi near the town of Serenge, according to the state-owned Zambia Daily Mail. The canoe started shaking and capsized after one paddler fell in the lake and his fellow paddlers tried to save him, four survivors who swam to shore told the newspaper. Zambian police spokesman Bonny Kapeso told The Associated Press that the boat was overloaded, with 21 aboard. The strong current contributed to the drowning deaths, he said. Most of the victims were women.
