Pope Benedict XVI arrives in Germany for visit

Church bells pealed across Munich on Saturday as Pope Benedict XVI began a six-day visit to his native Bavaria, landing in the city where he served as priest and archbishop more than a quarter-century ago. The 79-year-old pope's plane touched down at the Munich Airport, where he was to be welcomed by German President Horst Koehler and Chancellor Angela Merkel before riding in his vehicle to the city's central Marienplatz square and offer a prayer at its 17th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, the patroness of Bavaria - Germany's Roman Catholic heartland.
