Quake rocks Turkey; no reported injuries, damage

A moderate earthquake early Saturday shook western Turkey, the Kandilli Observatory said. It was not clear if there were any casualties or damage. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.6, struck near the town of Saruhanli in Manisa province at 05:56 a.m., the observatory said. Quakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the active North Anatolian fault. Two devastating earthquakes killed about 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey in 1999.
