Rice responds to Hamas victory

"You can't have one foot in politics and another in terror," US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in response to the apparent Hamas electoral victory on Thursday afternoon. Speaking to the Davos World Economic Forum, Rice interrupted a discussion on democracy in order to deliver the Bush administration's first response to the election upset. The elections, according to Rice, were "peaceful and free of violence, and by all accounts fair. The Palestinian people have voted for change," she said, but added in what may have been a veiled warning to Hamas, "we believe their aspirations for peace remain unchanged."
