Rome: Athlete injured in javelin freak accident

A long jumper was injured in a freak accident at the Golden League athletic competition in Rome, Israel Radio reported Friday. Salim Sdiri, representing France, was impaled by a javelin after Tero Pitkamaki, from Finland, slipped at the end of his run-up to throw the javelin and hurled it to the left of the landing area. Sdiri, crouching to warm up for his jump, was hit on the right side of his body and immediately taken to hospital by a medical team. Sdiri was conscious and injured only lightly, while Pitkamaki managed to regain his composure to finish his round and throw another javelin.
