Russia might send engineering troops to Lebanon

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Sunday that Russia is willing to send military engineers to Lebanon to aid in restoring damage from recent fighting, news agencies reported. "I stress that these are not fighting forces but engineering forces, which will restore roads and bridges," Ivanov was quoted as saying by the ITAR-Tass news agency. Ivanov said the troops could be sent as part of the international peacekeeping efforts "in the event of agreement by the Lebanese government," according to ITAR-Tass. The reports did not specify how many troops could be sent.
