Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday that negotiations with Iran without preconditions were the way to resolve the nuclear standoff, and reiterated his country was against sanctions or the use of force against Teheran.
"We are not putting forward any preliminary conditions. We are convinced that the Iranian issue must be solved solely through direct negotiations, on the basis of an agreement that would ensure the future of the nonproliferation regime and the rights of all the parties of the regime to develop their peaceful nuclear programs," Lavrov said at the Council of Europe, where he was taking over the six-month rotating chairmanship of the 46-nation human rights watchdog.
"We expect the situation will be resolved in a way that will ensure full cooperation between Iran and the IAEA," Lavrov said. "Iran must understand that what we all want is not to isolate the regime, but bring it into the circle of the international law."
"Various mechanisms can be utilized to ensure Iran is provided with the fuel it needs for peaceful purposes. Any mechanism must ensure the non-violation of the nonproliferation treaty," said Lavrov.
