Russian mayor and presidential hopeful receives delayed sentence

A city mayor pressured by authorities since he announced plans to seek the presidency received a delayed sentence Tuesday and will remain in jail to face other charges, news reports said.
Alexander Donskoi, mayor of the northwestern city of Arkhangelsk, was given a delayed one-year sentence by the Arkhangelsk City Court on charges of illegal business activities and using a fake diploma, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. The court also ordered him to pay a 75,000-ruble (US$2,930) fine.
Donskoi, 37, who has been in jail since his arrest in July, will remain in custody to face separate charges of abuse of office that are still pending.
Regional prosecutors accused Donskoi of ordering the use of the mayor's office funds to pay for personal security for himself and his family. He may face up to seven years in prison if convicted.
