Saudis amputate right hand of Pakistani thief

A Pakistani convicted of robbery had his right hand amputated in a public square in compliance with Islamic law on Wednesday, the Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement. Mohammed Haji Ghoulam had been convicted of theft in the holy city of Medina, said the statement, which did not disclose what he stole. His right hand was amputated at the wrist, the statement added. Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which thieves can have the hands cut off and those convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery are executed in public with a sword.
