The principal of a girls' school where two students were killed by gunmen this week cried and pleaded before a meeting of religious clerics on Thursday, asking if education for girls is a sin under Islam.
Bibi Gul, the principal of Qali Sayeda school in the central province of Logar, told about 20 religious clerics gathered at a Kabul school that "bullets rained down" during the noontime attack Tuesday that killed two girls and wounded two students and a teacher. Taliban operatives were blamed.
"My question is for the clerics: Is getting an education a sin? If it is, please tell me so I can close the door of my school," Gul said through tears. "I lost two of my children."
The slain girls, one in the 12th grade and one in 6th grade, were shot by gunmen on two motorbikes just outside the school yard gate as girls were changing classes.
