Spanish police have arrested six people in the northeastern city of Barcelona and surrounding towns on suspicion of belonging to a neo-Nazi group that promoted xenophobia and genocide, authorities said Tuesday.
The six men, all Spaniards aged ranged between 21 and 73, were arrested Thursday, regional police official Luis Centellas said.
One of the suspects is a junior activist of the conservative Popular Party who lives near Barcelona, police said.
The six were suspected members of an extremist group called "European National State," and they allegedly published a pro-fascist magazine and a Web site promoting hatred against immigrants, blacks, Jews and homosexuals, Barcelona's deputy police chief Joan Carlos Molinero said.
All six were released on bail after making declarations before a Barcelona judge on Friday. No date was given for a future court hearing.
