Japan's Meteorological Agency says a strong earthquake hit off the eastern coast of Japan.
The agency says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3. It struck just before noon Saturday off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, about 240 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.
The US Geological Survey put the strength at 7.0.
There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which also shook buildings in central Tokyo.
