Students Protest Against Darfur Genocide

Participants gathered in downtown Jerusalem yesterday evening to denounce and bring attention to the ongoing conflict in Darfur. The protest corresponded to similar protests world wide. Participants hoped the demonstration would increase awareness of the issue in Israel. Of the crowd of approximately 45 individuals, the majority of participants were from outside of Israel and are here studying for the year. Seraphya Berrin, 19, founder of the organization Talmidim Against Genocide and coordinator of the protest, explained that he did not feel this protest would distract people from the many other protests currently taking place regarding the conduct of the recent war in Lebanon and other local issues; rather, he felt it important not to ignore problems in other places of the world even though there are problems close to home.
