Britain and France circulated a new draft resolution to Security Council members authorizing a peacekeeping force for Darfur that they stressed took a less confrontational stance toward Sudan. Khartoum still branded the document as "ugly" and "awful."
The draft resolution, obtained by The Associated Press, calls for the deployment of a 26,000-strong joint UN-African Union force to try to stop the fighting between ethnic African rebels and pro-government janjaweed militia that has killed more than 200,000 people since 2003.
Britain's UN Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry said the co-sponsors toned down the language in the document to try to mollify the concerns of African countries, which had strongly opposed an earlier draft circulated to Security Council members this month.
