Suicide bomber kills 12 police, wounds 23 people in northern Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's military says a suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber on a motorbike has blown himself up near a police building in a northern town, killing 12 police officers and wounding 23 other people. Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara says Monday's bombing struck police officers and civilian bystanders on the street in the northern town of Vavuniya. He says 19 of the wounded are also police and the rest are civilians. Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not be reached immediately for comment.
