UK foreign secretary in Turkey for talks on ME

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett arrived in Ankara on Monday for talks on Turkey's faltering European Union bid and discussions on Iraq and Iran. Beckett was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul in Ankara on Tuesday before traveling to Istanbul to hold talks with Ali Babacan, the minister in charge of EU relations. Britain is a strong supporter of Turkey's EU bid. The predominantly Muslim country began EU membership talks in October 2005, but EU leaders partially froze negotiations in December because of Turkey's refusal to open its ports to EU-member Cyprus.
